 The ability to innovate requires the ability to create. Creativity begins with what’s on hand – the universe as it is today – and sees things as they could be. Superheroes use their creative powers every day to invent new technologies for fighting crime, to create massive blasts of energy that disable their opponents, or to design a plan that will foil their arch-nemesis. In business, you might invent a new widget, come up with a way to reach an untapped market, or identify a new accounting technique that can save the company on taxes.

How to tap into your creative reserves

Exercising your creative powers means doing certain things. It means training yourself to question the status quo. It means identifying how things should be, rather than how they are. It means recognizing opportunities. Most of all, however, it means thinking in new ways.

Tapping into your creative resources requires you to set aside all of your presuppositions and to ignore the crowd. There’s a reason that “thinking outside the box” has become a cliché: because it’s the right way to approach a problem creatively.

The benefits of brainstorming

If one individual can be creative on her own, imagine what can happen if many individuals attempt to be creative together. The creative power grows exponentially with each person you add. A brainstorming session can be the genesis of some new amazing ideas.

You need to establish some rules for a brainstorming session, however. For example, let everyone raise their ideas and discuss them before anyone brings criticism to bear. You need to assume that there are no bad ideas, but that there is at least one “best” idea and go after that one.

A brainstorming environment is emotionally safe and intellectually fertile. You’ll never see the leader of a league of superheroes say, “Sorry, Sharkman, that idea is just dumb.”

The truly original idea

Realize, finally, that in some ways you’re stuck working within the framework of reality. There are some rules that can’t be broken, and there are some things that have been tried and failed. The challenge is to identify those creative ideas that are both unique and that have potential for success. That’s a skill that comes, primarily, from experience.
