Not every superhero is born with amazing powers. They may acquire them after an epic chemical plant explosion, or they may build a suit that lets them move through solid objects. They all have some sense of natural integrity and determination, however. In the work world, combining your natural talents and inclinations with the skills you’re able to pick up along the way is how you get ahead in your career.
You have to start, of course, by choosing a career. It’s easy for a superhero to pick what they want to do, but it’s not as clear for the rest of us. There are three specific areas, however, you can look at in order to choose a career path:
- Start with what you love. The best possible scenario is that you’re able to identify some activity you thoroughly enjoy doing and manage to make a living doing it. While no one is likely to pay you to read comic books all day, you can at least find an area in which you have an interest. You might not be able to read comics for a living, but maybe you could write them, publish them, ink them, or own a local store that sells them.
- Identify your skills, talents, and assets. Sometimes, a superhero doesn’t even realize she’s super. It might take an exploding gas tanker on the freeway for her to discover that she can put out fires with the power of her mind, for example. Take a long look at yourself and figure out what you’re really good at. Consider some aptitude testing to see if there are areas you might be good at that aren’t yet explored.
- Explore and be flexible. Finding the right career path means being willing to try new things. Sure, accounting sounds like it would be a drag. However, you never really know until you take an intro accounting course. You may find that you enjoy crunching numbers. Believe it or not, some people can feel like accounting is quite an elegant field. Most of us don’t. The point is, don’t shut yourself off from one particular opportunity without trying it, especially if you’ve got a knack for it.
The more suited you are to your career path, the more successful you will be.
