If there’s one thing superheroes know it’s that stagnation kills. If the hero doesn’t constantly hone her strategies and powers, eventually the villain is going to figure them out. Likewise, if you want to succeed in business and in life, you need to always be on the lookout for ways to make improvements. Continual improvement can make the difference between a fast-track career and getting stuck in the same mind-numbing position for the next two decades.
There are three things you must do if you want to make that kind of progress:
1. Believe you can improve
This is two-fold. First of all, you need to believe that there are areas where you aren’t already perfect. You need to know you have weaknesses and be willing to work diligently to shore them up. Beyond that, however, you also need to have the confidence necessary to know you can make progress. It’s a delicate balance between humility and self-confidence that you need to strike. Even those skills you’re already good at need to be practiced and nurtured or else they will atrophy.2. Create, recognize, and seize opportunities
Sometimes, opportunity falls in your lap. Other times, you have to chase it down. In some cases, you need to pretty much create it in a vacuum. Be always on the lookout for how you can improve yourself, how you can better your company, and how you can better your world. Superheroes are ever-vigilant, watching for the dark shadow of the crime lord, ready to react.3. Know where you’re going
If you want to make progress, that progress has to be toward something. You need to want to be a better salesperson, a more efficient accountant, or a savvier tech guru. Identify the person that you want to be in the future and then do what it takes to get there.
This process of growth isn’t always easy, either. Sometimes, it hurts. Sometimes, you’ve got to take risks. The superhero who rushes in to save the drowning mayor puts it all on the line, and you need to do the same. Ultimately, however, you can be sure the reward is worth it.
