It can be tough to get promoted as a superhero. Sidekicks only rarely replace the hero; just as often, they go off and become villains. Luckily for you, advancing in the world of business is only almost as tough.
If you want to get ahead of the others in your field and in your department, you need to know how to get promoted. Promotions aren’t handed out just because you’re a nice person or because you’re talented. Promotions come when you have a proven track record and when the company truly believes you can make more of a difference in a new position than in your old one.
Accordingly, here are some tactics you need to follow if you want to make it to that next tier:
1. Find and utilize mentors
If your company has a formal mentoring program, get into it. If not, seek out someone above you and build a relationship. This helps you learn as much as possible, but it also creates a connection with someone at the next stage of your career.
2. Produce quantifiable results
If you implement a new accounting procedure that saves the company money on taxes, identify exactly how much it is and make that part of your communication with management. Let them see exactly what you’re worth.
3. Learn to advocate for yourself
If you want to get ahead, sometimes you need to ask. Ask for the promotion. Spell out your accomplishments and results. Do it in such a way that you aren’t merely bragging, but do it nevertheless.
4. Don’t let your boss be a roadblock
Some managers and bosses will take the credit for your work, and prevent senior management from seeing just what a massive asset you are to the company. If necessary, circumvent that level casually to make sure that those beyond your boss recognize the contribution you’ve made. Do so without disparaging your boss. Better yet, establish rapport with your boss and convince him to brag to upper management for you.
5. Do more than what’s required
Every superhero goes beyond the call of duty, whether it’s rushing back in to the burning building to rescue a kitten or whether it’s delivering the reporter to her apartment safely. Do your basic job requirements first, but then find other ways to help the company.
Getting promoted doesn’t just happen. You need to make it happen.
