Superheroes naturally show up at the head of the pack. Your natural talents, the skills you’ve developed, and the power of raw determination put you ahead of the competition in business .Getting ahead in business and in your career means getting others to recognize that talent, skill, and determination. In a one-on-one race, the superhero always beats the average Joe.
It’s not always as clear-cut in your career, however. To put your career on the fast track, you need to develop your superpowers – the job skills, knowledge, and competencies that will set you apart. You also need to demonstrate to your company just how valuable you are. Much in the same way that a superhero doesn’t become a favored son of the city until he actually saves the city, you also need to accomplish something to get noticed.
Here are three things you can do that will get your career on the fast track:
- Know your career. The first step in getting ahead is knowing the landscape. We’re not suggesting that you try to learn every skill on your career path overnight; rather, you need to understand everything you can about that career path, identify which skills are essential at what stage, and begin to hone in on the ones you need today.
- Demonstrate your worth. If you want to get promoted and if you want to advance in your career, you need to show that you’re worth it. Accomplish something. If you’re an accountant, work your pencil down to the eraser finding new ways to save on taxes. If you’re a network administrator, identify low-cost network solutions that dramatically increase performance or security. Put the power of innovation to work for you and show just how you can change the world.
- Be willing to jump ship. Sometimes, you’ll get stuck at a specific stage of your career. It might be the company doesn’t have an opening in which to promote you. It might be that they just don’t want to. Be ready to consider another company if you get stuck. If the superhero defeats the crime boss in Atlantic City, the next step is to go after the crime boss that the old one reported to in New York.
No one else is going to fast track your career. It’s up to you.
